Dear Links Families,
It has been an action-packed week at Links. Some of our Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 pupils attended the borough cross-country running events with Coach Cardisha, Mrs Wieszczek and Miss Bielecka. Today some of our pupils represented Links at the borough’s Tag Rugby event.
Class 5M attended Reeds Independent School in Cobham Surrey, where they took part in this year’s Launch Car event. Every pupil in 5M worked in teams to build a model car and launch it. Kacper and Charlie’s car travelled the furthest and they will return to Reeds for the final, alongside the winning team from 5GP, next week.
On Monday Year 2 visited Mitcham Lane Baptist Church to support their learning about a church building. This coincided with our harvest celebrations and the vicar was able to show the children their foodbank and the importance of supporting our community.
This week, we also continued with our annual library visits to Mitcham Library. The children in 2KB and Year 3 enjoyed visiting the library, reading a range of books in the igloo snug and listening to a story read by the librarian.
We would also like to give a special shout out to Mali in 4M, who had her poem ‘I Have a Dream’ published in the ‘Once Upon a Time - Words of Whimsy’ book.
Black History Month This month is a great opportunity to celebrate the life and contributions of the black community and while we recognise this through October as part of Black History Month, we also reflect and other cultures through our curriculum during the rest of the year.
Our Year 6 children have been learning about the life of Lilian Badar, who was the RAF’s first black female pilot. The children in Year 3 have been learning about Harriet Tubman, an American abolitionist who helped lots of enslaved people escape by the underground Railroad and Rosa Parks who invigorated the struggle for racial equality when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama.
If you would like to know more about their importance in our history, click on their names to be directed to the BBC Teacher website.
