PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools

"Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport you offer."

Our Sports Premium Funding

Since September 2013, the Government has provided primary schools with an additional grant for improving the participation and attainment of pupils in Physical Education and Sports. At Links Primary School we were awarded £18,772 for the 2023/24 financial year; this funding can only be spent on improving the quality of Sport and PE provision in schools

At Links we have always recognised the positive contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We strongly believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. The funding helps us to continue to provide these opportunities.

We use part of our funding for our membership of Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP), who support the school in a range of ways, both with our PE curriculum and our extra-curricular sport. In 2023 we were again awarded the MSSP Platinum Award, in recognition of the excellent standard of our PE and Sport provision.

PE

Part of the sports premium money is spent on developing the quality of our PE provision; one way in which this happens is by providing our staff with targeted, relevant CPD opportunities. Staff expertise and confidence in the teaching of PE are monitored and, from this, ongoing plans are made for staff training and development, which ensure that children’s needs are fully met.

We have also purchased the MSSP scheme of work for PE, which has been designed to cater for all needs across the school; the scheme provides progressive, differentiated lesson plans and resources and is of invaluable support to teachers in providing high quality PE lessons.

In addition, part of the funding is used to update and supplement our equipment to ensure we are able to deliver the PE curriculum effectively and efficiently.

Sport

As a school we have always been keen to enter every inter-school competition organised by MSSP, in order to provide a vast range of different sports for ALL pupils. This funding allows us to staff these events and ensure opportunities are open to as many children as possible – our commitment is for all children to have represented the school in some sporting capacity by the time they leave us in Year 6. These competitions provide an invaluable opportunity to experience a range of sports outside of school, and cater for all abilities; in addition, some events offer pathways for talented athletes and sportspeople to compete in the London Youth Games. We also provide children an opportunity to play 9-a-side football in a local inter-school competition.

Part of our funding also goes towards our provision for sporting clubs: we have a sports specialist from MSSP deliver before- and after-school sporting clubs on a weekly basis throughout the year.

Finally, the Sports Premium Funding enables us to deliver an exciting and memorable annual Sports Day for the whole school, culminating in the presentation of medals and certificates for the winners of track and field events. As we do not have the facilities in our school for such an event, we hire Tooting Bec Athletics Track, which creates a really special atmosphere of competition and an opportunity for pupils to experience the thrill of a professional venue and competing on a bigger stage.
